the fire lily
There is hardly a more striking sight in the realm of native flora.


There is scarcely a more striking sight in the realm of native flora. We probably know of no other flower that, even from a distance, would stand out so strikingly against the harmonious, colorful diversity of a flower meadow. Delicacy, tenderness, intricate detail, and feathery lightness are not its defining characteristics; yet it does not appear coarse or overpowering in the least.
Four languages—Latin, Italian, French, and German—each give it a very different name, with each language highlighting a different characteristic.
Let’s start with the Italian name, since it is native to Italy as a southern Alpine flora element: Giglio di San Giovanni. The name refers to its flowering period around the summer solstice, around St. John’s Day. In fact, we can now find several specimens on the beautifully maintained meadow in Naone. Compared to the first year of cultivation, they have even multiplied and spread to other meadow areas.
The growth period of our flower thus coincides with the time of year marked by the longest, brightest days and the most intense sunlight.
The fire lily is not a medicinal plant; it is not eaten in our culture, and unlike the Madonna lily, it does not hold a similarly prominent place in philosophy, religion, or art.
Plants have already been featured on this page on several occasions—for example, lavender, blackthorn, or the snow rose—to which I had added images from research in the humanities or imaginative, spiritual reflections in order to expand or complete the mental image.
This will not be the case with the fire lily either—the German name is entirely derived from its vivid, fiery color. If we base our examination of this plant on a guiding question formulated by Heinz Grill—“How, and what, do we look at when observing?”—we can, in this case, focus entirely on the quality and virtue of precise, attentive, descriptive observation.



When the flower blooms, it is noticeable that it has only petals and no sepals. This means that the bud is not enveloped or enclosed by leaves; instead, the colorful petals emerge directly from the flower stalk. Don’t be fooled if the young buds appear green: they simply haven’t taken on their full color yet.
The fire lily has six petals, which is characteristic of the lily family. Six is also the number of stamens, which are grouped around the pistil.

In any case, that’s not all; dark spots add further accents. Elongated, rib-like structures lend the large, wide, and beautifully shaped flower—which opens upward—a distinctive sense of inner depth. Facing fully toward the sun, it appears like a floating calyx of color or light.



There are two other distinctive features that cannot be observed in the flowering plant but are significant for the lily: The plant grows from a bulb. And the seed develops into a seedling with a single cotyledon, which is why lilies are classified in the large family of “monocots.” Interestingly, grasses and grains, among others, belong to the same class. You can easily visualize this by, for example, germinating a radish seed and any grain.

What about the leaves? The entire stem is covered with leaves; elegant, delicately curved lanceolate leaves develop. A closer look reveals a parallel-veined structure, which is another characteristic of the lily family.
The entire plant grows clearly and exceptionally upright. No branches or side shoots distract from the vertical line or give its appearance a sprawling habit. Despite its stately size, it stands quite stable and sways less in the wind than, for example, the delicate bellflowers. The flower, too, displays a distinct structural strength that allows it to maintain its form—and, as we’re in Italy, its “bella figura”—even in wind and weather.
Finally, let’s take a look at the small tubers found in the leaf axils. These are bulbils. This means the small tubers can be removed and planted in the soil. New plants develop directly from these bulbils. “Bulbe” is the technical term for the bulbils, which allows us to solve the mystery of the plant’s Latin name: “Lilium bulbiferum,” the bulbil-bearing lily. Strictly speaking, the Latin name Lilium bulbiferum refers to two different plants: the true fire lily, Lilium bulbiferum var. bulbiferum, which produces bulbils, and Lilium bulbiferum var. croceum [Chaix], which very rarely produces bulbils.
Surely it is now easy to close your eyes and, in your mind’s eye, bring the plant and its flower back to life.
What, I wonder, does this flower essentially express? Since no information is provided, we can let the flower and the question float freely and take on their own meaning.
In our imagination, we can now add the dimension of time to our observation. How did the plant grow, forming its stem, leaves, and bud, before the flower—with its striking, fiery color—revealed itself to the wandering gaze?
How will it continue to develop once the petals have wilted, the ovary has swollen, and the seeds have formed? Will we still be mindful of it when the meadow’s flora has transitioned into its midsummer or early autumn garb?
The farmer must surely keep it in mind when he leaves its areas untouched during mowing, to give it the opportunity to set seed and spread. The bulbs, too, will fall to the ground and require favorable conditions.

For a concluding, comparative analysis and a more in-depth study of flower structure, additional lily-like flowers should be included. All of these lilies can be found at this time of year in the lowlands or subalpine zones north and/or south of the Alps.
